MAHOGANY FOREST PROJECT

Origin and objectives

 Swietenia Macrophylla, known in the world with the name of Mahogany, it's a leafy tree that clims till 35 meters high and three meters of circumference in the trunk.

It is the queen of the exotic woods because his pleasant fragance, strong texture and beautiful color.

The Mahoganies that use to grow in the Yucatan Peninsula was the most appreciated in the world.

Right now, they are practically dissapeared from our forests. The idea to develop a Mahogany Forest, in an extension initially of 100 hectares, surge from the necesity to redeem from extintion and protect an specie able to grow in this zone.

Values of the Mahogany Forest Project

To create a Mahogany Forest, with great simbolic and emotional values as a endangered specie (thare have been boicots in various european ports against mahogany wood shipments from latinamerica).

It will enrich all the surroundings, it will be a prestige and an attraction for the village of Dzemul where it's located.

There will be a seedbed and vivarium that will give work and employment to some people.

It will benefit and improve the environment and local fauna.

A small museum will be mounted to show the evolution, grow, value, benefits, etc, of the mahogany and all the forests.

It will be an educational attraction to schools and the public in general.

Objective of the Mahogany Forest Project

Being an non-profit project but one with an ecological nature, the mahogany forest has the objective to be converted in a patrimony of the community.

The objective of this forest is the improvement of the environment, the education and benefit ef the village of Dzemul.

How can I take part in this project?

This project is developed by the 'Asociación Civil Komchén de los Pájaros'. However his progress is limitated by the shortness of funds.

Our proposal is that in this project participate people and institutions interested in the protection of the nature.
