What is Rancho Komchén?
Komchén Bird Sanctuary is a private non-profit organization established in an Hacienda Henequenera in the Yucatan peninsula in Mexico, which provides facilities for the practice of ecoturism.

Its mission is to sustainably develop and conserve a nature reserve and at the same time improve the living conditions of local people.

The visitors will have the opportunity to explore the region, discover its countless natural and cultural attractions and meet the modern-day Maya.

The Sanctuary is a large ranch which formally produced the plant fibre, sisal and consists of 340 hectares of tropical dry forest which is home to an enormous diversity of plant and animal life.

There are many mammals including the feline predaator Margay, small forest deer, fox anteater, racoon and also several species of reptiles. There are abundant species of butterflies and of course, a prolific variety of birds, such as the hummingbird, owl, heron, cardenal, tanagra, flamenco, motmot and other rare tropical birdlife as well as migrating birds passing through.

Because of this rich birdlife, Komchén has been declared an association for the study and protection of birds.

There are bicycles for riding along the trails through lush tropical vegetation.

Visitors accommodation is arranged in huts or palapas built in the Mayan tradition, with stone walls. These were formally used by the workers on the ranch. There are confortable and cool Mayan hammocks but for those who prefer, there are also simple beds available.

There are banana and papaya groves and a market garden. The produce is used in the simple but hearty home cooking. No pesticides or chemical fertilizers are used. There is an abundant underground supply of drinking water, which is regularly analysed for its purity. Bread is baked at the ranch.

En estos doce años nos hemos dedicado a proteger y regenerar, en la medida de nuestras fuerzas y con escasos recursos económicos, la flora y la fauna de 340 hectáreas que durante años fueron sistemáticamente deforestadas y quemadas para el cultivo del henequén.

Hemos plantado más de cinco mil árboles, se ha construido una aguada, al estilo de los antiguos mayas, donde se recoge el agua de lluvia para abrevadero de animales silvestres en época de secas, y en la que además se puede nadar, Se han rehabilitado seis antiguos estanques o piletas destruidas por el tiempo y se han construdo otras seis nuevas, todas ellas pobladas con peces y plantas acuáticas, que son aprovechadas por las aves y otra fauna local.

  • Rancho Komchén de los Pájaros have about 340 hectareas of low jungle with a rich botanic and faunistic variety.
  • Hay tigrillo, venado, gato de monte, zorro, mapache, oso hormiguero, tejón, iguana y armadillo entre otros; también serpientes, infinidad de mariposas y gran variedad de aves, como colibríes, charas, momotos, cardenales, tángaras, colorines, cenzontles, búhos, garzas... y numerosas aves migratorias.
  • Las construcciones de Komchén son de piedra con techo de paja (palapas) al estilo maya tradicional. Los visitantes se alojan en las casitas antiguamente habitadas por los trabajadores de la hacienda. Se duerme en cómodas hamacas, al estilo maya.
  • Todo en Komchén obedece a un criterio rústico y sencillo, para turistas no convencionales.
  • Hay bicicletas para pasear por la reserva e ir al pueblo o a la playa.
  • En Komchén hay caballos, siempre sueltos pero que se pueden montar para paseos.
  • Todos los animales viven en absoluta libertad.
  • Hay agua subterranea en abundancia y un pequeño cenote de agua corriente.
  • Se cultivan algunas especies para el autoconsumo, como papayas, plátanos y más frutos, sin plaguicidas ni fertilizantes químicos.
  • Se elabora diariamente el pan.
  • Komchén de los Pájaros da la bienvenida a visitantes con intereses científicos, centrados sobre todo en el estudio de la flora y la fauna, las tecnologías alternativas y el legado de la cultura maya.

Komchén Bird Sanctuary wishes to welcome all those visitors with a generous spirit and who have a sincere interest in nature and other cultures. Modest accommodation is provided for the ecoturists who want to experience an unusual holiday and wish to relax in a unique place, far from the madding crowd. We hope that our visitors will integrate with the environment and the local people to their mutual benefit.

Komchén also invites scientists to carry out studies especially on the flora and fauna, alternative energy resources, sustainable development and the Maya culture. Also those people who would like to join the Komchén project working and contributing to achieve the declared objectives.
